I must say it's tough to be a freshmen and make a portfolio. Not to say I haven't written lots of pieces this year, but having not begun many classes geared towards my major I don't have quite the volume of journalistic and anthropological pieces. In LA101H, Rhetoric and Civic Life, taught here at Penn State, I wrote a policy paper. I think this is one of my strongest pieces all year and exemplifies my ability as a writer. I love writing and organizing a pieces, another driving force behind why I want to be a journalist. LA101H was a course aimed to teach freshmen the foundations of rhetoric, which will be useful and built upon in their following years at Penn State. This piece was the final paper for LA101H, which had to illustrate and put forth the knowledge of rhetoric we learned this year. The paper had to consider an issue either at Penn State or on another level and then offer a policy that would aim to change the issue for the better. I think the elements used in the piece will be essential to a career of writing and photography, both of which thrive on attracting an audience. Understanding and effectively using rhetoric is essential to my future.
